Understanding Sciatica: How Chiropractic Care Can Help

Sciatica refers to pain that follows the path of the sciatic nerve, which extends from the lower back through the hips and buttocks and down the back of each leg. This type of discomfort is often misunderstood and can range from a mild ache to sharp, radiating pain. In our practice, we see people nearly every week experiencing sciatic symptoms.

While each case is unique, supporting spinal alignment and nervous system function may help ease the sciatic pain and get to the root cause of the problem.

What Causes Sciatica?

Sciatica is not a condition in itself but rather a symptom of an underlying issue involving the sciatic nerve. Common causes include:

  • Herniated or bulging discs – Spinal discs that press on nearby nerves may irritate the sciatic nerve roots.
  • Spinal curvatures or Scoliosis – Having a curve or scoliosis in the low back can put increased pressure or irritation on the Sciatic Nerve Roots(L4-S3) as the come out of the holes(IVFs) between each individual vertebra.
  • Pelvic misalignments – Imbalances in hip alignment can lead to either direct stress on the sciatic nerve from the SI joint or lower pelvic bone. It can also increase muscular tension from piriformis or Glut. Medius as they are stretched/pulled tighter than they should be by above misaligned pelvic bones/ SI joint.
  • Prolonged poor posture – Sitting for extended periods will contribute to lower back stress in the way of disc compression/herniation, increased muscular tension, and decreased alignment.
  • Pregnancy – Increased weight of the baby and spinal adaptations to accommodate said weight gain often can cause pain, tension, and low back or pelvic symptoms to flare up, especially during the 3rd trimester.
  • Piriformis syndrome – A tight piriformis muscle in the buttock may compress or irritate the sciatic nerve as it passes overtop, underneath, or through the piriformis muscle.

Sciatica typically affects one side of the body(at a time) and may involve numbness, tingling, burning sensations, or leg weakness either just down to the back of the knee or sometimes all the way down into the ankle or foot.

How Chiropractic Care May Help with Sciatica

While chiropractic care does not treat sciatica as a medical diagnosis, it may support better function by addressing the structural factors that can aggravate the sciatic nerve.

We begin with a detailed assessment and exams of each individual’s posture, spinal alignment, and movement habits. Based on our findings, care may help:

  • Promote spinal alignment – Correcting misalignments in the lower back and pelvis may reduce stress on the sciatic nerve.
  • Relieve inflammation and tension – Improving joint mobility and addressing muscular imbalances can ease local inflammation and tension.
  • Support nerve communication – When alignment is improved, the nervous system is able to function and heal more efficiently.
  • Encourage better posture – Education around healthy posture and daily movement can reduce recurring strain on the lower back.

This approach is consistent with our overall goal of helping the body move and function optimally through neurologically-based chiropractic care.

Other Supportive Approaches

Some things many of our patients do to help support the correction we do with spinal adjustments in our office include:

  • Incorporating gentle stretching and mobility work
  • Strengthening the core and gluteal muscles
  • Reducing extended periods of sitting
  • Including regular, light movement throughout the day
  • Making ergonomic improvements at work or home

We’ve discussed similar habits in previous blog posts such as How Chiropractic Helps Forward Head Posture and Its Impact on Your Health and The Effects of Rounded Shoulders (“The Hunch”) and How to Improve Posture, which highlight how posture and alignment can affect the entire spine.

Final Thoughts

Sciatica can interfere with daily movement and comfort, but in many instances, it stems from postural or structural imbalances that may be supported through chiropractic care.

By improving alignment, encouraging healthy movement, and supporting nervous system balance, chiropractic may offer meaningful benefits—though outcomes will vary between individuals–depending how long its been there or if there are other complicating factors like degeneration, disc herniations, or stenosis.

Interestingly enough, one of the common ways that Sciatica is diagnosed is by simply bending the neck forward. This leads to increased tension throughout the spinal cord beginning in the neck and may cause shooting pain down the back of the leg(sciatica). We’re always reminded how connected different parts of the body are!

And by extension of that same thought, if you already have stress, tension, text neck, rounded shoulders, forward head posture, or other structural problems in the neck, how much easier it is to start having symptoms, like sciatica, elsewhere in the body.

Our focus is on helping people fix their spinal weaknesses to get out of pain and then build greater strength or resilience in their bodies through tailored care rooted in spinal health.

For those navigating sciatic symptoms, an alignment-based spinal evaluation may be the first step towards reducing pain, improving mobility, and making recurring sciatica a thing of the past.
