Tips for Improving Foot Pain: A Guide by Roots Chiropractic

Foot pain is a common issue that can interfere with daily activities like walking, standing, and even sleeping. Whether it’s a dull ache, sharp pain, or burning sensation, discomfort in the feet can significantly impact overall well-being. At Roots Chiropractic, we understand the importance of proper foot health. Foot pain can arise from various causes, and knowing how to address it is essential.

We want to share insights on common causes of foot pain and practical steps to alleviate it.

Understanding the Causes of Foot Pain

Foot pain can stem from a variety of factors, including ones from within the foot or from above the foot. Some of the most common causes include:

  • Plantar Fasciitis – Inflammation of the plantar fascia, the tissue that runs along the bottom of the foot.
  • Numb Toes/Feet– Pinched nerves in the base of the low back run down to the toes and can cause numbness/tingling
  • Tendinitis – Inflammation of the tendons due to repetitive stress or strain.
  • Poor Hip Alignment – Poor Hip Alignment – Habits such as sitting with legs crossed, scoliosis, horseback riding, and one-side dominant sports can contribute to hip imbalance and misalignment. This misalignment can cause the leg and foot to rotate, leading to issues like overpronation or flat feet. In some cases, skewed hips can be a contributing factor or may worsen these conditions.

Identifying the root cause of your foot pain is the first step toward effective relief. If you’re unsure of what’s causing your discomfort, seeking professional guidance can help you find the best solution.

Practical Tips to Alleviate Foot Pain

Choose Supportive Footwear

High-heels are a no go. Too much cushion can make you walk weird. Avoid shoes that are too tight, too loose, and even Crocs can be problematic. Go for a wide toe box to allow feet and toes to move. Moderate cushioning or even researching and going to a store to be sized for “barefoot shoes” can be a great step towards better shoe choices.

Maintain a Healthy Weight (Distribution)

Excess weight places additional pressure on the feet, increasing the risk of pain and strain. Also, having chronic postural misalignments can make you “heavier” or put more weight on one foot/knee/hip. This makes you more susceptible to pain and injuries. This is a test we do in our office on the very first visit—putting two scales side by side with one foot on each. Some people unknowingly discover a 8kg or more difference between the two scales!!

Strengthen Your Feet

Strengthening the muscles in your feet can enhance stability and support. Simple exercises such as toe curls, heel raises, and ankle rotations can improve foot strength and flexibility.

Chiropractic Care for Foot Health

At Roots Chiropractic, we take a holistic approach to addressing foot pain. Chiropractic may help support foot function by identifying and addressing misalignments that contribute to foot discomfort. Sometimes this means working on curvatures in the low back, compressed discs, irritated nerves travelling to the foot, or correcting hip imbalances and rotations.

Otherwise, we also can do assessments and adjustments for the structure and function of the 26ish bones in each foot or check the knees for slight shifts or problems too!

When to Seek Professional Help

Since the body always has the capability to heal itself, minor foot pain can be managed or alleviated with ice, stretching, or letting it rest.

However, chronic or worsening discomfort could indicate a more serious structural issue or significant pathology. If pain continues for longer than a few weeks, consulting a Chiropractor or another healthcare professional is recommended.

At Roots Chiropractic, we’re committed to supporting individuals in their journey toward long-term wellness through chiropractic care as part of a holistic approach to health.

We provide guidance on holistic approaches to foot, knee, and hip health, helping you explore potential solutions to feel better, move better, and function better resulting in a healthier, happier YOU!
